How the job is done

A fire door is tested as a complete assembly: the leaf, the frame, the seals, the hinges, the closer and any glazing. It only gives its rated protection, such as 30 minutes for an FD30 door, if it is installed the way it was tested. A good door fitted badly is not a fire door.

A&P installs fire doors to the manufacturer’s fitting instructions and the door’s certification. That means a suitable frame, fixed securely and fire-stopped to the wall with a compatible product, gaps around the leaf kept within the limits for that door, intumescent and smoke seals in place, fire-rated hinges, and a self-closer that pulls the door fully shut and engages the latch.

Where the existing frame is suitable, the new leaf can be hung in it. Where it isn’t, we’ll say so and price a full doorset. When the job is done you’ll know which doors were fitted, where, and to what rating.

Questions people ask

Can you replace just the door and keep the frame?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the existing frame is suitable for the new door and its certification. We check before we quote, and if the frame isn’t suitable we’ll price a full doorset instead.

What does FD30 mean?

FD30 means the door assembly was tested to hold back fire for 30 minutes. FD60 means 60 minutes. An “S” suffix, as in FD30S, means it is also fitted with smoke seals to limit the spread of smoke.

Do you take on single doors?

Yes. No job is too small, whether it’s one flat entrance door or every door in a block.
